1. Glass jars are environmentally friendly
Glass is an infinitely recyclable material. Glass is inert and does not lose quality when recycled. It is therefore important to sort it properly. Of course, recycling glass consumes energy. This is one of the reasons why it is preferable to reuse glass, which is a very suitable material.
Plastic pots on the other hand are not infinitely recyclable. Some plastics are not recyclable at all.
Glass jars are therefore sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic.
2. The glass jars are airtight and keep the flavours
Glass jars do not give off anything to the food. The food retains its characteristic taste, flavour and smell.
Plastic, on the other hand, has an odour and this is transferred to food. It can emit Bisphenol A, which is an endocrine disruptor and releases a taste that ends up in your food. So be careful with the boxes you reuse !
You can easily make a nice little dish and put it in a glass container to keep all its flavour, reheating it when needed. Unlike plastic, glass does not melt or warp when you leave it in the microwave for too long.
You should also know that you can put the glass jars in the freezer without worry.
In addition, the glass is non-porous so it will not give off any food odour once the jar is closed in your cupboard.
Finally, if you choose a glass jar with a good airtight lid like « Le Parfait » or « Bormioli », you'll have no trouble carrying a meal to work.
There will be no risk of leakage as the glass is watertight and will not warp. It is a little heavier than a plastic pot but the advantages are worth it.
Glass is "fragile", but food storage jars are thick and strong. Unless you have an accident, you should not break a jar while moving around at work !
3. Jars have a long shelf life
Unless you break your glass jar, you can keep it for life. Glass is indestructible.
Personally, my grandmother gave me some glass jars (Le Parfait style) from when she was young. I put them in boiling water with soap for 15 minutes and they were fine again.
If you only compare the prices of a plastic pot and a glass pot, the glass will be more expensive. But if you look at the long term, you will make significant savings.
4. Glass jars are aesthetically pleasing
Having beautiful jars on your kitchen shelves is much more aesthetic than having all kinds of packaging.
Plastic Tupperware is also less elegant than glass jars.
Be careful, however, that the food is not exposed to too much light as some foods are sensitive to UV light.
Prefer stainless steel (opaque) containers for tea, coffee, soy for example.
5. Glass jars are easy to clean
A little hot water, soap and that's it! A glass jar is easy to clean, unlike plastic jars.
We all know the effect of tomato sauce in a plastic jar, it's impossible to remove !
With glass jars, you can put bolognese, ratatouille, ... A little hot water and it will all go without any difficulty.
To conclude...
So... are you convinced?
So, zero waste is above all, and simply, a matter of changing habits. The alternatives to single packs and plastic exist. They are even old, but they still work.
Just try it and you will realise that zero waste has nothing but advantages. Let's stop filling our bins with waste that consumes scarce resources, and let's indulge ourselves!
See you soon!
