How to properly clean your reusable water bottle ?

Why is it important to wash your reusabe water bottle ? 

No matter what material you chose for your water bottle, it is important that you clean it well. Bacteria can get inside, such as :

• Staphylococcus aureus, 
  

• Escherichia coli, 

• Acinetobacter sp, 

• Pseudomonas sp, 

• Serratia sp, 

• Proteus vulgaris.
  

The risk of contamination increases when you put something other than water in your water bottle. However, drinking only water does not guarantee the absence of bacteria.

It is essential to clean your water bottle properly to avoid contaminating it with bacteria. Bacteria grow less easily in a stainless steel bottle than in a plastic bottle.

Cleaning your water bottle regularly will also prevent bad odors and keep your water bottle healthy.

How to clean your reusable water bottle ? 

First of all, it is important to rinse your water bottle with clear water when you get home and leave it open.

Then, there are several methods to clean your bottle :

1. Simply use warm water and soap. Dry your bottle well before filling it.

2. The dishwasher can be used in certain cases: single-walled stainless steel or glass bottles are no problem. However, plastic is not dishwasher safe. As for the isothermal stainless steel bottle (double-walled), it may not be able to withstand a very high temperature wash.

3. My grandmother's technique: put soda crystals in the bottle, fill the bottle with boiling water and wait a few hours. Rinse the bottle well before refilling it. This works for glass or stainless steel bottles. It's a big cleaning to do once a month.

4. You can also rinse your water bottle daily with baking soda. It is not a natural disinfectant, but it stops the growth of bacteria.

5. Another way to clean your bottle is with vinegar. Put half vinegar, half soapy water and leave it overnight. This kind of cleaning is usually done once a month.

Don't forget to clean the cap of your water bottle, bacteria can easily accumulate there.
