How to maintain your wooden utensils?

Discover 5 tips to correctly wash wooden utensils

In order to make your utensils live longer, it is important to take care of them. If you follow these little tips, they will look like new for longer.

Here, we will talk about wooden utensils in general:  plates, cutting boards, and cutlery.

1. Clean your utensils after each use

As for every kitchen utensil, it is essential to clean your wooden utensils so that they can remain as new.

Therefore, you only need tepid water, a simple sponge (or a brush washer) and natural soap like Marseille soap.

2. Do not put your wooden utensils in the dishwasher

Wooden utensils are not compatible with the dishwasher. Indeed, wood is moisture sensitive because it is a porous material. It does therefore not support high humidity levels, as those in the dishwasher.

Moreover, if you put your wooden utensils in the dishwasher, they will be exposed to chemical products.

As mentioned above, wood is a porous material and so absorbs chemical products. Opt thus for hand washing with ecological soap.

3. Do not let your wooden utensils soak in water

As said before, wooden utensils do not like humidity. It is strongly discouraged to let it soak in water.

Food does not cling to wood as it does to stainless steel, glass or plastic. Therefore, there is no need to let it soak to remove the residues.

4. Do not let your utensils dry next to a heat source

Wood is a material that is moisture-sensitive but also heat-sensitive. It does not appreciate sudden changes in temperature.

Once your utensils washed, do not put them near a heater, a toaster, a hob or other.

Wooden utensils are likely to split or to scorch  because of the change in temperature and humidity.

Therefore, you will keep your utensils in good condition if you get them away from heat sources.

5. Oil your wooden utensils

One last tip to make your utensils last longer is to oil them. Therefore, you just need to put a bit of oil on a cloth and then to rub your wooden utensils with it.

This makes it possible to feed the wood, to make it less porous and give it a facelift.
