1. The story of spoons until the introduction of wooden spoons

It has always been necessary to find a way to be able to mix the food without using one's hands or feet.

To this purpose, we had to invent utensils, and more specifically the wooden spoon. Because if you use a fork, it will be less efficient because of its small surface and its holes.

But since when exactly does the wooden spoon exist? The spoon in itself   has existed since prehistoric times, when shells were used as spoons. In fact, the name "spoon" is derived from the name "shell".

At the paleolithic age, people started using spoons made of wood or bones. This invention then crossed the ages. In Ancient Greece, these spoons were used to eat eggs. At this time, Rome knew 2 different sizes of wooden spoons.

Today, there are dozens of different spoons, for different uses. Here are some examples:

  • Mocha spoon

  • Caviar spoon

  • Zakouski spoon

  • Teaspoon

  • Tablespoon

  • Sugar spoon

  • Dessert spoon

  • Wooden spoon

  • Honey spoon

2. Hygiene and wooden spoons

Wood is a quite interesting material. It is a hygienic material that is perfect to cook, despite everything you can hear about it.

In reality, wood is a natural antibacterial agent, thanks to the tannin that it contains and to its pores. In addition, bacteria survive less time on the surface of this material than on the surface of other materials.

However, wooden utensils including wooden spoons are always covered with a layer of oil, in order to create an antibacterial protective surface, we can never say it enough.

These utensils can be used in the kitchen without worrying about hygiene matters.

3. Ecology and wooden spoons

Wood comes directly from our forests, it is not chemically modified. It is a material that nature offers us. In view of its versatility, it is considered a treasure. With only little mechanical work, it is possible to realize big things with wood, practically everything can be built of wood.

The wooden spoon is one of the many possible wooden objects. It is a 100% natural material and is also, to our delight, 100% compostable and has thus no negative impact on the environment. It leaves zero waste behind after its use.

Even in terms of its maintenance, it does not pollute at all. To check this, do not hesitate to read our blog about the maintenance of wooden cutting boards. The principle remains the same.

From an ecological point of view, wood is the material that I prefer.

4. Wooden spoons and our beautiful pans and stoves

As humans, we like beautiful things. We like to have a beautiful house, nice furniture, a pretty kitchen, a beautiful family, but details matter too: nice utensils, pans or stoves for example.

However, in the course of time, we can notice that it is deteriorating: pans are scratched and not beautiful anymore, they are less efficient and can even pose a danger if the covering peels off.

To solve this problem, there is one solution: wooden spoon and all other wooden utensils. As wood is less hard than stainless steel or Teflon, the coating of your pan will be protected.

It allows you to keep many of your kitchen utensils longer, and so to have a positive impact on the environment. Every little effort to avoid wasting matters.

There are many different wooden utensils, do not hesitate to read our blog about the 10 essential wooden utensils in the kitchen.

To make your pans live longer, one single word: wood.

5. The burns when you cook with stainless steel utensils.

Have you ever tried to let a stainless steel ladle on the side of your pan or stove? Have you then tried to take it back? You probably burned yourself. This is because stainless steel is a heat-conductive material, so if you leave the stainless steel utensil in contact with the pan or the food, its temperature will rise. Stainless steel is of course an essential material, but you have to know how to use it.

With wooden utensils, do not worry anymore. It is a non-conductive material. It can be left in any pan or stove. Furthemore, it is convenient and safe.

Avoid  traditional kitchen burns by using wooden utensils.
