What you need to know before you start using fabric diapers for your baby

What are the best washable diapers for you and your child? Choose carefully and use properly

With an average of 5 diapers per day and 3 years before potty training, a baby will use more than 5000 diapers.

And yet, fabric diapers raise questions: is it healthier for the baby? Is it really more ecological? Isn't it much more complicated?

For the first few questions, study offices (including ADEME) have produced some documents explaining that disposable industrial diapers are less healthy for babies and have a higher ecological weight.

Reusable diapers, when chosen conscientiously and used properly, allow :

  • To reduce its ecological footprint

  • To save money

  • To put baby in contact with less harmful products

In this series of articles, I want to answer the question of organization and share with you my own experience with cloth diapers. I have indeed adopted them for my daughter and I have had a very positive experience!

The first thing to know is that a fabric diaper must fit the child's body type. If you don't choose the right model or the right brand, you may end up with leaks or too much laundry and quickly drop the project. I therefore strongly advise parents, grandparents, guardians and childcare specialists to start by familiarizing themselves with a rental kit. You can rent a kit with a variety of different brands and systems for a specific period of time (usually one month). This way, you can be sure to find THE system that suits your baby and your organization. This type of kit is available kind of everywhere, so don't hesitate to ask your local City hall to tell you which organization offers rental kits near you.

It may also be worth to do some research on the subsidies available for investing in this type of diaper. You can get a bonus from some employers and some municipalities for the purchase of cloth diapers. In this case, don't forget to keep your purchase receipts!

I encourage you to consult the attached articles on this topic, which will give you clarifications on :

  • the different types of diapers

  • the first use of reusable diapers

  • the daily organization

  • the maintenance of fabric diapers
