L’impact polluant du papier toilette sur notre environnement
Classic toilet paper in 2, 3, 4 or even 5 ply is (as soft as it can be), unfortunately, not at all environmentally friendly. These rolls also cost their own little bucks and the brands with the highest prices are often also the ones that pollute the most.
According to the WWF, more than 27,000 trees are flushed down the toilet every day worldwide, that's more than 9,855,000 trees a year! And in Belgium, 480 million rolls are used every year. A Belgian household would use an average of 120 per year. Unfortunately, it's not only trees that suffer, it's also a matter of water, because as Woody Allen says : “Problems are like toilet paper. You pull on one and ten more come”. Indeed, in order to produce a single roll, 140 litres of water are required. These figures make you dizzy, but what solutions do we have at our disposal?

In her book "Zero waste home, the ultimate guide to simplifying your life", she proposes several alternatives. These include
- Reusable clean wipes, but not for after pooping of course.
- The Washlet, a high-tech solution to be placed on the WC, which requires water and electricity to operate, but which does not completely eliminate the use of toilet paper.
- Hands with water, as in many countries.
But let's not hide it, if we want a minimum of comfort, "without getting our hands dirty", or changing our habits too much, there is a fairly simple solution.
When you choose your toilet paper, what do you think about? Do you look at the plastic packaging, where it comes from, whether it's made from FSC wood, whether it's made from recycled fibres or chemical paper bleached with chlorine?
