1. What is ravintsara? Origin and composition

Plantations of ravintsara (cinnamomum camphora cineoliferum) have been established mainly on the island of Madagascar for two centuries. Native to Asia, this bushy tree, 15 to 30 metres high and with very fragrant reddish bark, belongs to the Lauraceae family, camphora species. The essential oil of ravintsara is extracted from the leaves.

Ravintsara means "tree with good leaves" in Malagasy; the quality and richness of the oil depends on its origin.

  • The essential oil of ravintsara of Madagascar is rich in cineole and without camphor,

  • Chinese Hô wood essential oil is rich in linalool

  • Vietnamese or Japanese essential oil is rich in camphor

The place of cultivation, the type of sunlight and the harvesting season change the chemical composition and content of the essential oils.
