Your sense of smell and taste are sensitive enough to leave a grin on your face with every sip? Here may be a solution to purify the water in your decanter or flask and at the same time save you money and reduce your ecological footprint.

The activated charcoal binchotan

Coal... In my water?!

Binchotan is an activated charcoal made from a variety of very hard holm oak that purifies water by reducing chlorine, demineralising the water and balancing its pH.

Due to its extremely porous surface, chemical substances in the water will stick to the walls of its micropores.

How to use a binchotan?

Before using it for the first time, it is recommended to rinse it (with water only) and boil it for 10 minutes, then let it dry for 2 to 3 hours, ideally in the sun. You only have to put it in the water you wish to purify and wait for one night for it to be purified.

How long does it take for the binchotan to eliminate the unpleasant taste of tap water?

The minimum recommended time for a correct result is one hour. For an excellent result, the ideal is to leave it for 4 hours. And for a perfect result, you should leave it to rest for 8 hours.

Nevertheless, it is not recommended to drink water that has been in contact with activated charcoal for more than 48 hours... Remember to change the water in your carafe!

How do I take care of my binchotan?

The best way to care for your binchotan is to rinse it with clear water, but it should never be washed. And of course it is not suitable for other drinks such as juices, syrups or other infusions.

If you notice that the binchotan's efficiency decreases during its life cycle, immerse it in boiling water for 10 minutes and then use it again to purify your water!

How do I know when my activated carbon binchotan is at the end of its life?

After about 3 months of use, you will observe that the activated charcoal will become dull and greyish, it will then be time to replace it or even better, to reuse it!

It can still be used for many things:

- Excellent natural plant fertilizer, grind it and mix it into the soil for your plants.

- Natural air freshener for your shoes, in your fridge, the cat litter, ...

- Moisture reducer, it absorbs moisture from the air.

- Anti-termite, this activated charcoal is a real termite repellent.

- In your garden compost

- Or simply in the fire!
