IRIS
In 1984, the agricultural production and labour cooperative IRIS was founded as a collectively owned company with the aim of growing exclusively by organic methods.
The aim of the company is based on 4 essential points :
1. Practice and distribution of agricultural cultivation through organic farming
2. Job creation mainly for women and disadvantaged people
3. To develop a direct relationship with the consumer, in order to disseminate the agricultural culture and the method of cultivation according to organic and biodynamic production.
4. Promote the culture of collective ownership.
Consumers, workers and farmers are stakeholders in the Iris project.
Most important points:
1. Political and statutory decisions are really only taken by the general assembly of Iris.
2. The Board of Directors manages only the ordinary activities of the company.
3. All the leaders of the cooperative are also members, the management of the cooperative is not top-down.
4. The profits of the cooperative are invested in social purposes.
5. All salaries have the agreement of the union
6. The President and the officers shall not receive additional salary for their activities.
7. Certain quantities of fresh and processed products are given to worker members in addition to their wages.
8. The direct relationship with the consumer is privileged in order to spread the ethical values of the cooperative.
9. Iris' raw material supply chain is carried out by farmers located all over Italy, the crops are controlled by the agricultural technician and all are certified organic.
They trust in an ethical and economic social growth but it must be shared by all the "actors" who trust the "Iris economic project" whether they are members, workers or consumers.
The cooperative has recently created a Foundation to share and disseminate this economic model.
