In 1890, in a small village in Maurienne in Savoie (France), Joseph
Opinel invented the pocket knife which today bears his name. The Opinel company is still run by the descendants of Joseph Opinel and manufactures in the heart of the Alps, in Chambéry*, articles whose quality has made the reputation of the brand for nearly 130 years.
The collection is made up of knives and pocket tools for DIY, sport, outdoor activities, gardening as well as kitchen and table knives.
The Chambéry plant employs 130 people, 75 of whom are directly involved in production.
To keep pace with the development of the activity, 2000 m2 of industrial buildings have been added to the existing 4000 m2 (1500 m2 in 2015 and 500 m2 in 2018).
In 2017, 5 million items were sold in more than 70 countries around the world for a turnover of 24 million euros, 45% of which was achieved through exports.
The American subsidiary Opinel USA was founded in Chicago in 2016,
it ensures the marketing of the brand's products in the United States.
