Coated fabric to replace food film : DIY recipe for successful Beewraps

We have tested the homemade Beewrap recipe for you ... and it works!

It is not easy to remove the food films to wrap leftovers, sandwiches, cheeses when we are trying to reach zero waste!

However, the alternative exists with coated canvas, often called beewrap. The pioneer brand in this area and one of the best is Abeego, but others have followed the path. However, be careful with the quality of the wraps you buy. Beebee produces very pretty coated fabrics with colorful patterns and of excellent quality.

The fabrics waxed with beeswax are waterproof and take the desired shape thanks to the warmth of your hands. They are easily and quickly washed off with lukewarm water with a little bit of mild washing liquid..

The uses of coated canvas are multiple:

- Pack your sandwiches

- Store leftovers by covering a dish in the refrigerator

- Roll out the pie dough with your rolling pin

- Pack cut fruit, cheese, cut vegetables

- Pack your cold meats and cheeses at your favorite merchant if you don't want to take heavy glass containers.

Here is the recipe for a successful Beewrap :

Ingredients and material for 4 wraps

- 4 fabric coupons: for example 2 squares of 20 cm each side and 2 squares of 35cm each side (depending on your needs, it is sometimes useful to keep a baguette, in this case a 45cm x 25cm coupon can be useful)

- 80g beeswax

- 20g of Dammar resin

- 3 tsp jojoba oil

- 1 baking tray

- Baking paper

- 1 wide brush (3-4cm)

Process

- Preheat your oven to 110° C

- Place a baking plate covered with baking paper in the oven

- Melt the 3 ingredients over a low heat in a small pan

- Meanwhile, cut your fabric coupons

- Once the mixture has melted, remove the baking plate from the oven, place a piece of fabric and coat it on one side only. The wax will penetrate the fabric to cover both sides

- Return the baking plate to the oven for 5 minutes to allow the wax to distribute evenly and penetrate the fabric well

- Take the baking plate out of the oven, grab the corners of your wrap with your fingers, lift it up and allow it to cool by swinging it slightly above your baking plate. It solidifies quickly and you can then place it on a cold surface so that it finishes solidifying.

- Repeat with the other fabric coupons.

- Clean your fingers with turpentine or acetone.

Your turn now. Grab your scissors and pans !
