Is butter healthy?

Contrary to some popular beliefs, butter is good for your health. It has wrongly been accused of being responsible for obesity and cardiovascular diseases, but it is not the case!

Of course, butter is caloric (720 kcal per 100g) but consumed in a reasonable way, it does not produce anything bad for your health, on the contrary. As the saying goes "All things are poison and nothing is without poison, only the dose permits something not to be poisonous"

However, butter should never be heated above 140°, as it then blackens and becomes toxic. Keep therefore a close eye on your butter, it melts quickly.

What are the benefits of butter?

Butter is healthy and has even some benefits:

  • It reduces the risk to get diabetes

  • It does not contain lactose, so it is free to consume for those with lactose intolerance

  • It is rich in vitamin A, an anti-oxidant that helps to maintain a beautiful skin

  • Butter is a source of calcium, essential for our health

  • It contains vitamin E, which protects against oxidative stress

  • It contains linoleic acid, an anti-inflammatory agent

Butter would be good for your skin and for your bones, but only in reasonable quantities, i.e. 15 grams per day. This is equivalent to 2 buttered toasts.

What is the best butter for your health?

There are many types of butter and different alternatives to it depending on your choice of consumption.

As a reminder, butter is good for your health but in reasonable quantities (about 15 grams per day). It is therefore interesting to use different fats, such as vegetable oils and vegetable margarines to diversify the nutritional inputs.

Ghee is a clarified butter, an interesting alternative to butter, used to make cakes, to bake and to fry. It is a common ingredient in ayurvedic cooking. It is lactose free and a source of vitamin A and E. It would also have draining, nutritive and regenerative properties...but this has not yet been proved.
