The water butter dish was conceived in the 18th century, it was used to preserve butter when refrigerators did not exist yet. It is the oldest butter dish in existence.

It consists of two compartments: one with butter and one with salt water (or tap water). The first container with the butter is immersed in the second containing water to allow the preservation of the butter protected from the air.

Water butter dishes are very popular with people who live without a fridge or for people who are into zero waste but not only! During a picnic, while camping or on the road to vacation, it offers an easy solution to take your butter when there is no fridge.

Another way to store butter, just as decorative as the water butter dish, is to keep it in a butter dish plate. Generally, it can contain a 250 grams butter plate (hence its name). It is a good way to keep butter in the fridge and to be able to present it nicely on the table.

This butter dish has the advantage of being able to be presented in many forms. It is made of different materials (glass, stainless steel, ceramic, bamboo, etc.) and there is no shortage of patterns. There is something for everyone!

You can keep your butter out of the fridge for a maximum of one week.  Its consistency will be very softened whereas the Breton butter dish keeps the butter at a good consistency. It is therefore perfectly suitable for a quick consumption.

3. The table butter dish

The table butter dish is not a preservation tool but simply a way of presenting the butter during a meal.

It is simply a small container or saucer in which you put butter to present it during the meal. The disadvantage of this butter dish is that if everything is not consumed during the meal, you will have to waste the butter left in the air during the whole meal and it does not preserve the butter.
