We've already shared a bunch of tips and tutorials to turn your kitchen into a  zero waste kitchen.  Now, let's move on to the next step which is to ( really ) cook in zero waste mode. 

It is not enough to go and do your  bulk shopping to be totally zero waste in your kitchen. If you are interested in taking waste reduction to the next level and/or are curious, you are at the right place !

By cooking yourself, you will know exactly what is in your food: no additives or preservatives! 

You also reduce packaging because you no longer buy ready-made meals with lots of packaging. If you also make the children's snacks, you eliminate individual packaging and you make healthy snacks that make people happy (we know you have a sweet tooth).  

It's easy to replace the "ready-made" products in stores with your own homemade creations. For example, if you want to replace the plastic-wrapped compotes with good homemade ones. There are   reusable compote bottles. Plus, they're super fun with their animal designs.

2. A zero waste recipe reduces food wastage 

 

a. By setting a menu for the week 

In order to reduce waste in your kitchen, the best way is to write out your weekly menus and make a shopping list so that you only buy what you need and don't forget anything at the back of your fridge. 

Little tip: keep your menus and the list of necessary purchases, it can be used again in a few weeks without effort !

You will be able to buy in bulk the precise amount you need for you and your family.

b. By being creative 

When cooking in zero waste mode, you must also try to be creative. You want to use as many ingredients as possible to throw away as little as possible. Here are some examples : 

  • The tops (of radish, carrot or turnip) can be used to make great soups  

  • Make broth with chicken carcass 

  • Dry bread can be made into good French toast  

  • Vegetable peels can be used to make vegetable chips  

  • Potato cooking water can be used for weeding 

  • You can also make smoothies with old fruit  

  • Keep your food (such as cheese) in closed containers to make them last longer

If you still have some waste left, you can put it in the compost, which ultimately allows you to fertilize your garden. So don't throw your organic waste in the garbage, reuse it !
